Scenes & Incidents: Dinner-Time Among Insurgents

Ten reasons books want you to read them

  1. So their ideas spread beyond their covers, no matter how well-designed those covers are

  2. It is in a book’s nature to be read, by reading them you’re helping them lead their best lives

  3. So they can learn about you, while you’re learning from them

  4. They like the feel of fingers on pages, or swipes on a screen

  5. So that when you return them to their shelves, they have new things to tell their neighbours

  6. Even though they like sitting, closed and properly arranged on a shelf, they need to have their spines cracked now & then

  7. The more we read them, the better they get at telling their stories

  8. They respect the efforts of their authors, and want you to as well

  9. They like being brought to different rooms, or even out of the house sometimes

  10. Because without readers, they’re just collections of letters
