Ten Favorite Fotos - Juli
July was a slow photography month. I struggled to find 10 “favorite” photographs, but I’m ultimately pleased with what I’ve come up with. This first gallery is completely studio-focussed. I love pictures of messy, well-used work spaces. While I do always clean my studio at the end of a workday, I just can’t get down with perfectly-ordered and art-directed artist studios. When I look at an art studio, I’m looking for clues into the work, for behind-the-scenes glimpses, and for half-finished things that might turn out to be great. I want to see the middle of the work day, not the beginning or the end.
This gallery is more of a mixed-bag. In the fourth photograph you can see Charlie, my flea market buddy, and in the fifth…The full sign reads “LESBIANS SAVE THE WORLD” and I noticed it walking one way across the bridge. The light wasn’t that good, so I planned on photographing it on the way back. Walking onto the bridge the second time, the light was great, traffic was light, I decided to wait until I was directly across from the sign to shoot it.
Then a couple families chose that spot to plan their weekend picnic, or something. I waited. More people showed up. I waited longer. They kept standing in front of the sign. I took this picture and walked on. I guess now lesbians are saving families, not the world at large.
Stay tuned for ten more photographs next month, plus a few work updates along the way.
