snow and cold buildings at Wittenberg Platz, Berlin

January in Berlin is a tricky month. It doesn’t really know what it wants to be. In December we get snow, which melts by Christmas. In January winter makes an attempt to rally and graces us with a couple days of freezing rain and the odd bright, sun-shiny dad, before dropping back into Berlin Grau.

In January I started a new studio calendar and added my first few projects to my project list. I also took my traditional, “looking down into the Hof” picture, which featured two times in my 2023 favorite photos. The view outside my studio window is, you guessed it, rather grey, but the trash cans are fighting the color wars with style.

At the end of the month I had an exhibition at Brauhaus Neulich, and captured a few rays of sun illuminating the trash in the street. I’m not the first to remark that parts of Berlin (including where I live) have a bit of a NYC in the 80s vibe. Prepping for the exhibition I sorted a great deal of old paper, and walking home from a friend’s flat was mesmerised by a rainbow falafel sign.

With my the whole time, my lovely wife, here as we head to the yarn store. No pictures of the yarn to share, but I did start knitting a hat in February, so maybe that’ll show up before long.
