Zehn Fotos, Mai

Telephone and typewriter in the Stasi Museum, Berlin

Another month gone by, another ten photographs.

In May I took fewer pictures than any other month this year except for January. I’m not entirely sure why but there’s no question that my motivation - not for photographing but for “stuff” in general - is at a low point. While my collage work remains exciting and I’m full of ideas for it, my job search has been frustrating and draining. Some days it’s easy to forget about all that and simply make work that I care about. Other days it’s not. I worry that the time I spend doing things like editing photographs and writing blog posts, or researching collage material is simply put, too selfish.

Ultimately I think that it’s not, that it has both personal and job-related value, and that as long as I make sure I’m also making time for active job searching (I am), it’s worth the time. With that in mind, enjoy 10 photographs from May, 2024.

Highlights of the month were my folks coming to town and a bike tour from Berlin to Leipzig. My folks have visited us here a couple times already, but Berlin is big & interesting enough that it’s easy to find new things to do. Two pictures from the Stasi Museum and a very touristy picture of the Alte Nationalgalerie are from their visit. I’ve been lucky enough to see the Caspar David Friedrich exhibit twice already and it’s well worth the time.

The weather while I rode dirt and farm roads from Berlin to Leipzig (230ish KM, not the most direct route) was outstanding and the route relatively easy. With a few changes to the track, I’ll definitely do it again.

Two other photos in the post were shot just walking around Berlin. That’s the real value in having a camera that’s easy to carry and fits in any bag (Fuji x100v). When I know it’s there, I keep my eyes just a little bit more open and take a moment to grab the shot.
