Flohmarkt Find

On the way back from meeting a friend for ice cream (Berlin has amazing vegan ice cream, FWIW), we found ourselves walking through one of the weekly flea markets, Flohmarkt in German.

It’s not one we usually go to, as it’s in one of the “cool” parts of the city and is therefore a bit over-priced and picked-over, but we were here, so I did a pass through on the lookout for old paper. My idea Flohmarkt find is a banker’s box full of old ledgers and accounting books, or student exercise books, or a suitcase full of old letters. I’ve not yet fully figured out how to use photos in my collages, so they’re not what what I gravitate to. Plus, Flohmarkt vendors know that people find DDR-era photos interesting and will pay a couple Euro for one snapshot.

But I found this album and was intrigued. It’s mostly empty, but a few of the remaining pages tell the story of one New Years eve party, counting down from 8pm until 4am the next morning. And the handwriting is lovely.

I offered the vendor 10€ for the whole album. He got an easy sale, and I got a bunch of great photos that I need to start thinking about how to use.
